How fit do I need to be?


Regardless of your size, age, or conditioning, there's a style of climbing for you.

In fact, as you start out, general fitness probably doesn't matter for climbing as much as you may think. In particular, while a strong upper body certainly doesn't hurt, it is completely eclipsed by your ability to effectively use your feet. Eventually you'll find climbing performance becomes coupled to one's strength-to-weight ratio, but beginners can go far by simply studying proper technique.

On behalf of those who have discovered the joy of climbing, the important thing is to try your best and be proud of your performance. Realize that the only competition exists between you and the holds on the wall. Give yourself permission to try, permission to fail, and permission to flush out emotion.
